The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences is one of the best medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh. It was founded after Sanjay Gandhi and was established through an Act of the State Legislature in the year 1983. Situated in a 550 acre campus at Raebareli Road, 15 kilometers away from Lucknow, it was instituted and intended for the pursuit of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare. It also provides advanced postgraduate training in medical and non-medical sciences leading to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D. degrees, among other postdoctoral fellowships and certificate courses.

Actually the groundwork of SGPGI was carried out on December 14, 1980, as spearheaded by President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, with the vision of creating a trend-setting medical institute. Within the years, the institution increased its specialty services and added some departments like Critical Care Medicine, Hematology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and more and more, with the support of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Sewa Yojna. SGPGI is also a constituent of the Medical Council of India, and the institute is an autonomous body capable of conferring recognized degrees. It is also a member of the Association of Indian University and is recognized by the University Grants Commission.

The institute has also innovated in the establishment of a telemedicine program in 1999 and School of Telemedicine & Biomedical Informatics in 2006, a unique center in India. SGPGI is recognized for initiating patient care models in the form of Hospital Revolving Fund, which ensures the bedside provision of discounted medicines and Investigation Revolving Fund for diagnostic supplies. It is also a nodal centre in the country under the National Organ Procurement and Transplant Network program and is a study centre for dialysis training under the National Transplant Program.
