Thiruvalluvar University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in October 2002 in the Vellore district. Thiruvalluvar. The university is located on a large campus of about 112.68 acres at Serkadu, near Vallimalai, which is about 16 km from Vellore City.

The university aims at becoming a source of education for all. The main mission of the organization is to concentrate on research and dissemination of knowledge for solving the problems faced by people in four districts -Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Cuddalore. These are economically and socially backward regions with a large proportion of the populace living in rural areas alongside the poverty line. Vellore district also contains substantial adivasi and scheduled tribe populations that need better access to higher education. To be admitted, students must take an admission exam. The exam is held by Thiruvalluvar University in different departments at Serkadu, Vellore-115.

Students who got their degrees from other universities need to get an Admission Approval Eligibility Certificate from Thiruvalluvar University to register. MA And MSC Admission

There exists a two-year Master's degree in Arts and Science at the university. Three specializations in Arts and four specializations in Science. The final selection is based on Entrance Exam scores and previous class/board exam scores in 50-50 ratio.

MPhil And Phd Admission

The university offers research courses in M.Phil and Ph.D. with various specializations. M.Phil programs need two years to complete for full-time students and three years for part-time students. For PhD. programs, five years for a full-time student and six years for part-time students. There are three types of PhD. Full Time Research Scholars (with or without fellowship), Part Time Research scholars from among Teachers and others nominated by the university, when Number of years for PhD program is minimum 3 year-Full time research scholar would be eligible) outside his parent Institute- if faculty members are not available based on institute strength Full-time employee in industry located within a radius up to 100 Km. These courses admission are done on the basis of previous exam marks, entrance based and interview-based. Exemption from Entrance Test for Full-Time M.Phil course admission: Those qualifying in exams such as UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination, SLET, GATE or the holders of teacher fellowship are exempted from the entrance test.

For PhD. admission, students who qualify in these exams do not have to take the entrance test but must still attend an interview with 60 marks. Part time program applicants must include a Service Certificate and a No Objection Certificate with their application. Preference for M.Phil admission is given to teachers working in colleges affiliated with the university, and their service certificates should be issued by their school's principal. Candidates registering for non lab subjects must ensure that these subjects are available at affiliated colleges.

Distance education

The university offers distance learning programs for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For undergraduate courses, students can choose from four specializations: Science, Commerce, Arts, and Business Administration. For postgraduate courses, the options are Commerce, Arts, and Business Administration. Students can also take a Diploma course in one of four specializations: Computer Applications, Human Resource Management, Hospital Administration, and Yoga for Human Excellence.

• Students taking regular college courses can also enroll in another UG or PG course through distance education.
• There must be at least a two-year gap between the date of passing the 10th standard (SSLC) exam and the Higher Secondary (+2) exam or any other equivalent exam to join the first year of a degree course.

On July 13, 2023, Muthoot Microfinance Ltd. held a campus recruitment event for students from Arts and Science colleges under Thiruvalluvar University, covering the Ranipettai, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai districts in Tamil Nadu.
