The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University came into existence in the year 1987 located at Chennai, and it is named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran. Earlier, the medical education in Tamil Nadu was administered by the University of Madras. But the Tamil Nadu government needed a special university which would concentrate on medical education and research. The work started in 1980 in this regard. A High-Level Committee under the leadership of Dr. M. Natarajan along with Dr. S. Kameswaran was formed to prepare recommendations for starting this new university. The Tamil Nadu Medical University was established by the Tamil Nadu Medical University Act in 1987 and started functioning in 1988. It provides a gamut of medical courses, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate. It covers areas like modern medicines, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other traditional Indian medicine systems like Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani. There are now over 700 affiliated colleges spread across Tamil Nadu. The overall objective of the university is to maintain academic excellence in healthcare and quality training with academic and research input in medicine. The campus has all upgraded facilities such as a library and laboratories that support both government and self-financing colleges. MGR University is also certified by such bodies as the University Grants Commission (UGC). It has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
