Raiganj University was established under West Bengal Act XXVI of 2014 on 3rd February 2015. Raiganj University is the first Unitary University in North Bengal. It was instituted by promoting the undergraduate State Aided Institution- Raiganj College into a full-fledged university. The 13.62-acre Raiganj University is located at the Uttar Dinajpur district headquarters and has more land for the future expansion.

The university offers an all-round range of programmes and comprises 22 undergraduate and 23 postgraduate departments, along with 17 departments exclusively dedicated to Ph.D. and M.Phil. studies. The university is recognized under clauses 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act, 1954, and is thus eligible for funding from the Government of India.

With a total enrollment of approximately 12,600 students-here also included the international-the university aims to achieve academic excellence through the efforts of 90 permanent faculty members-many with advanced degrees. Many of the university's centers, for example, the Centre for Folklore Studies and the Centre for Women's Studies, have been classified Centres of Excellence.

The focus of Raiganj University also rests on research, outreach into community, and environmental efforts, thus supporting extension programs that can help spread literacy and health education. The library contains more than 61,598 volumes in the digitization process.
