Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith popularly known as MGKVP, is a public university in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, established in 1921 by the leader of the Bhoodan Movement, Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta. This university was once known as Kashi Vidyapith before being renamed in honor of the Great Soul, Mahatma Gandhi. The university played a significant part during the British rule in India by emphasizing the nationalist values of the students and providing education in the Hindi language, a medium of instruction. There was a view that whatever the institution offered had to be in unity with the nation's cultures and thus MGKVP was at the forefront of making Hindi the medium of instruction.
