The KKHSOU is one of the premier institutions in North East India. The KKHSOU was established in 2006 in Assam by the Assam Legislative Assembly. It is the fourteenth of its kind in conjunction with IGNOU and the only open university owned by a state in the whole of North East India. The headquarters are based at Patgaon, Rani, and Guwahati. The university offers a wide range of courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses for students in the fields of humanities, social science, science, management, and commerce.
Other than the regular courses, the university also offers courses like vocational and skill-based courses, which help the students to enhance their skill sets. KKHSOU is recognized by UGC (University Grants Commission) and DEB (Distance Education Bureau). KKHSOU also focuses on preserving and promoting the Assam cultural heritage and language.

National Scholarships
- The Post Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities is funded by the Minister of Minority Affairs and targets minority communities pursuing post-secondary education.
- Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for Professional and Technical Courses is another initiative under the Ministry of Minority Affairs that focuses on encouraging minority members to enroll in technical or professional courses.
- Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students; supports financially disadvantaged merit worthy individuals who take up their studies in institutions of higher learning; hence help them meet daily living expenses.
- National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students; this encompasses scheduled tribes among all those receiving education after successfully completing Form 4 under this particular program initiated by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
