The Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology for Handicapped (AITH) was established in 1997 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh as part of a World Bank-funded project under the Technical Education Program. The institute is associated with AKTU Lucknow. AITH Kanpur offers technical education to students at the undergraduate (B.Tech.) and diploma levels. The entire campus is barrier-free and dedicated to global vision, with both normal and disabled students studying together. The Undergraduate level of study is open to both normal and disabled students, however the Diploma level course is just for physically impaired students.

AITH Kanpur provides B.Tech programs in five specialisations: Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Information Technology. Every B.tech Specialisation given by AITH Kanpur has a total of 60 students in the first year. AITH Kanpur also provides lateral entry to its B.Tech program.

AITH Kanpur Diploma Courses are only open to students and their parents who are residents of Uttar Pradesh, excluding NRIs, foreign nationals, and PIOs. AITH Kanpur Diploma Courses are limited to three specialisations: Architectural Assistantship, Computer Science & Engineering, and MOM & SP. Each has a total intake of 40 students. AITH Kanpur exclusively admits students with a permanent physical disability of 40% or higher. Except as noted above, all reservations are effective in accordance with UP government rules and regulations.
